Marigold (Calendula), also known as Bride of the Sun and Poor Man’s Saffron, is a Mediterranean native grown as an ornamental throughout the world. Like many of its botanical cousins, this member of the sunflower family produces vibrant yellow-orange flowerheads that also provide color and flavor to butter, cheese and other foods, as well as pharmaceutical drugs and hair and skin care products. Calendula powder is a concentrated form of the best the plant has to offer – phenolic acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, aroma compounds and a unique mix of polyunsaturated fatty acids.
Use calendula powder in creams, lotions, infused oils, bath bombs, bath salts, body butters, facial toners, facial masks, scrubs, soaps, shampoos and conditioners.
Safety: There are very few safety concerns regarding calendula powder. However, if you have a known allergy to other plants in the daisy family, such as ragweed, it would be a good idea to perform a 24-hour skin patch test before using it topically. In addition, this herb should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy. While there are no reports of herb-drug interactions, the actions of this herb may interact with certain medications, such as sedatives, and medications for diabetes and high blood pressure. Consult your health care practitioner for advice.
